What to buy

Limnos is popular for its white wine and its traditional white cheese known as “kalathaki”. Try the local, handmade chilopites and flomaria (both are types of traditional pasta), as well as the local rusks. The thyme honey, produced on the island, is also exceptional.

Finally, do not forget to taste the “venizelika”, which are local sweets made with walnuts and chocolate.

On the same day, it is worth visiting the quaint, nearby island of Agios Efstratios that became known as a place for exile. It is the ideal destination for nature-loving outings. Its beautiful deserted beaches, accessible only by boat, attract lots of visitors.

Pilgrim Tourism

The island of Limnos carries a  history regarding religion of more than 1.000 years. A wide range of medieval, convents and monasteries of Agio Oros grace the island. Their big consignment, nowadays, is the final form of the modern temples, whose inhabitants did not leave anything to luck.

The churches, themselves, are real pieces of art. It is worth noticing that the majority are creations by prominent stone carvers (called petropelekanoi) that gave them their present final form mainly in the 19th and early 20th century. The woodcarving winged altarpieces, just like the rare Byzantine icons are quite distinctive.

If the idea of a pilgrim trip sounds thrilling, then you will definitely find peace in one of the many small country temples that the picturesque villages of Limnos sport.

Do not forget to be present on the 20th of July at Prophet Elias, where one of the most beautiful feasts as well as vigils of the island are to take place.

In addition, the mass of metamorphosis of Sotiros, at the coastal small church, situated between Panagia and Plaka, taking place on the 6th of August, attracts hundreds of worshippers.
